Walk or Bike the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail from Cannery Row

A Few Blocks | 3 Minutes Walk

The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail is a paved, car-free path that follows the old railway line along the bay, and it runs right through the Cannery Row neighborhood, a few blocks from Cannery Row Inn. It is flat and shared by walkers, runners, and cyclists.

Head west and the trail takes you past the Monterey Bay Aquarium to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Head east and it leads past Cannery Row to Fisherman's Wharf, Custom House Plaza, and Monterey State Beach, and on toward Seaside. Bike and surrey rentals are available near the waterfront, so you can see a long stretch of the bay without moving the car once.

Tips

  • The stretch from Cannery Row to Fisherman's Wharf is about a mile each way and makes a good first outing.
  • Keep right and pass on the left. Weekends and summer afternoons are busy.
  • Watch the kelp beds near the Aquarium for sea otters wrapped in kelp.
