One of the best things about staying near Cannery Row is that you can leave the car parked all day. The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail links most of Monterey's waterfront highlights, and it passes a few blocks from Cannery Row Inn.
Morning: west to Lovers Point
Start early, when the trail is quiet and the bay is often glassy. Walk or ride west about a mile and a half to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Look for sea otters in the kelp on the way.
Late morning: the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Come back along the trail to the Aquarium at the west end of Cannery Row. Book a timed ticket ahead and plan on a few hours.
Afternoon: Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf
- Walk the length of Cannery Row and step down to the little beaches between the old cannery buildings.
- Continue east on the trail to Old Fisherman's Wharf, about a mile from the hotel, for harbor views and the sea lions on the rocks.
- Next to the wharf, Custom House Plaza starts Monterey's Path of History through the adobes of Old Monterey.
Evening: back to Cannery Row
The walk back along the bay at sunset is the best part. Dinner on Cannery Row is a few minutes from your room.
Tips
- Bike and surrey rentals are available near the waterfront.
- Keep right on the trail and pass on the left.
- The whole loop described here is about six miles on foot. Shorten it by skipping Lovers Point.
